A whirlwind two weeks began with the EFR instructor course (Emergency First Response). A day of CPR and first aid was a nice introduction to the PADI system of learning.
The next two days were filled with IDC prep, which consisted of a number of skill circuits and a number of mock exams. It was a good introduction to what the next eight days would have in store. On the same day we also received a timetable, consisting of 8:00am starts and 7:00pm finishes along with homework to fill the time. It all looked a little daunting to begin with but as we began the IDC it was apparent that there would be no time for fear, tears or any other form of emotion for that matter. Two weeks of intensive learning were upon us and we were assured that the time would fly, sure enough it did. People’s scores began to dip but with almost certainty over the last few days everyone was getting good scores. As if by magic we found ourselves on the eve of the IE ( the Instructor Examination). We all retired to bed early and regrouped at 6:30am to begin two days of evaluation.
We began the day with an hour of orientation; we received an assignment sheet telling us what skills we had each been given. We were also allocated a number and a colour, which would now be our names for the next two days. When I looked at my assignment sheet I realised I had been allocated the CESA (controlled emergency swimming ascent) for the open water portion of the exam, this would take place on the second day. We were all told not to worry about the second day but to concentrate on day one. The CESA is one of the more complex skills and can easily be gotten wrong, naturally this was at the back of my mind. We began by completing the confined water exam then we headed back to the Hilton Hotel for our three hours of written exams. We were all told our results after each section and all was going well. We completed our classroom presentations and as if by magic day one was over. After a quick snack for dinner we all retired to put together our briefings for the open water exams the next day.
A nice long sleep was welcomed and we all regrouped at 7:00am. After practicing our briefings we headed to The Red Sea Relax hotel for our final evaluation. We where the second group in the water and so an hours nervous wait was in order before it was my groups time. Before we new it we were in the water and one by one we where going through the skills, problems where allocated by the examiner and the new instructor candidates were spotting them easily. I was last in line and finally it was my turn. I began with a rope skill that went smoothly with no hitches, excuse the pun. Finally it was time for the CESA, the one I had been dreading. I took one student up, spotted the problem and fixed it. Then the second student, I spotted the problem and that was it, over. An air of relief was felt, along with a bit of a blurred memory, it really was over. Our final task was a rescue assessment, which we all past. After leaving the water we all completed our de-briefs and awaited our fait.
100% pass, awesome and the certificate ceremony followed shortly. Of course the 80’s party then followed that and if I could remember what happened there I would have written about it.
It was an awesome two weeks and it passed very quickly. We completed our MSDT training in the three days that followed. The fact is that this is only the begging of the road to becoming an instructor. Its not about the pieces of paper, or the scores on the exams. Its about gaining experience teaching something we love, there’s a lot to be learnt yet and a hell of lot of fun to be had in the process.

Enjoying my time before the storm>>>
Well my girlfriend was with me for two weeks at the start of the month, the time went too quickly. We did have a great time, even though I had to work for a lot of it. Climbing Mount Sinai was something I could only really do with her, as I would have never got round to it on my own. Near the end of the stay I took Rach for an intro dive, put on some scuba kit and go for a dive with no formal training basically. These trips usually consist of kitting the person up, getting them in the water then dragging them round by the tank and pointing at fish. They then get out, say it was awesome and sign up for a course. Rach on the other hand was a natural, by the end of the dive she was neutrally buoyant swimming around on her own pointing at fish. She was clearly an amphibious animal in a previous life.
Guiding has been fun for the last couple of weeks, I’ve finally had the chance to use my camera under water but its getting them on the net that’s the problem. I received my official PADI Divemaster card the other and was reminded of what all that effort was for. The problem is I am kind of in the eye of the storm. If you’ve ever seen the film perfect storm then this will make sense. The scene when they are hammering through 50ft waves with no sign of getting through the night. Suddenly the clouds part and shards of sun light stream down with a climes of blue sky. The crew celebrate as they think they’ve made it, just as I have put a lot of effort in to get this level. Then the clouds roll in again, it was merely the eye of the storm and they had a long way to go before the night was through. I am now heading for part two of the journey, taking the steps to become an instructor of the sport I enjoy so much. Just as the crew accepted the sun and enjoyed that moment so I have enjoyed working as a DM and I am now ready for the challenge of becoming an instructor.

A WEEK ON THE BOAT … AND SOME!!>>>>
I return to work and check my emails, a message from PADI has arrived and its official, I am a PADI divemaster #650370.
The next week is spent on the boat, for the most of it the Romy Star. A group of disabled ex-military are staying at the maridien and are diving with us, but due to access problems need the boat for a week. What a bunch of guys, all in high spirits and ready for the challenge. Some where able to walk but others could not and needed full assistance. There was a group of AB’s ( able bodies) on hand to help, such as friends and family. There were three main dive groups and I was assigned to private guide Jacko. An ex member of the grenadiers guard, with the ink to prove it, and a keen basketball player….wheelchair basketball that is.
Jacko and I dived together all week, he had minimal use of his legs but was still able to fin a little. He was a gas guzzler and the first two dives only lasted 15 minutes. We dived together all week and over this time Jacko’s diving improved ten fold. We began to bond and we seemed to be the only team to spot all the best animals, blue spotted rays, huge napoleon fish, grouper and many more. The one thing Jacko wanted to see was a moray eel. He had dived in Cyprus many years before and had a magical encounter when the dive guide had tickled a giant moray right in front of jacko’s eyes (not safe diving practice and not endorsed by me in any way). All week I had searched for a flipping moray, even the other groups had seen one but not us. We even went to Gabr El Bint, one of the most pristine dive sights in the Sinai, still nothing.
On the final day we descended onto Napoleon reef for our final dive, Jacko wanted me to take a photo of him holding a news paper. The particular paper had a competition to see who could be seen reading it in the strangest place, we where sure Jacko could win with this one. After returning the camera to the boat we set off. We looked under every rock and I every crevice. We saw two huge napoleon fish swim past, nearly a meter and a half in length and half a meter tall, their beautiful giant eye ball rotating to monitor our movements. It was an early morning and the lion fish where still out hunting, what an awesome dive but no sign of the moray. We returned to the boat and we swam around under the boat before starting our ascent. Jacko stopped, under a large lump of coral just below us was a little grey moray eel with its head exposed. You cant talk under water but Jacko and I celebrated with flailing arms frantic signals of OK!!! Mission complete, time to return to base.

A DAY TRIP FOR THE MEMORY BOOKS>>>>>>
It’s been a while so this update will be a long one, here goes:
A day off, the second one I have had since I arrived. Well needed not only because I was tired but also to recover from my snorkel test the previous night, a story I will have to tell you all in person. After a day of nothing it is off to bed early, have to be up at 2am the next morning.
I awake to my alarm and snooze until 2:30am on the 26th October. I make my way over to the dive centre and meet with team Netherlands, a group of Dutch divers, family and friends, that I will be joining for a dive on the Thistlegorm. The wreck is about a two hour boat trip out of Sharm El Sheik, so we board the taxi at 3am and set off through the Sinai mountains.
We arrive 45 minutes late and hurry down the jetty to board the boat at around 4:45am. We depart, after stocking up with tanks, into the gulf of Aquaba. After drifting off to sleep on the top deck I am awoken by screams of joy as we find dolphins surfing our bow wave and playing in the early morning light. I stay awake to watch the beautiful sunrise. As we turn north at around7:30am we make our way up the Gulf Of Suez while tucking into pancakes and coffee.
We arrive at the wreck to find around 10 other boats moored to the ship, apparently this is not as busy as it can be.
We enter the water for our first dive around 9:00am, wow. We are greeted by the stern of the ship, appearing out of the mist as we descend to around 30 meters. There is no current, we come first to the rear gun, an awesome sight almost as if it was lifted from the film set of alien. The stern sits at an angle on its side, we then get to the blast hole, bend shards of metal bending up to 10 meters in the air. On the deck we find live rounds and shattered metal.
We are then greeted by the bow section of the ship where we enter the hold, torches on. One of the first things that we find is army jeeps parked end to end, windscreens in tact, 10 maybe 20 of them. We then twist and turn through the hold, over numerous motorcycles, all still in good condition. We then enter the captains cabin to find his bathroom still in tact, bath toilet and all. Trough the front door and onto the bow, looking up to find giant travally hunting and spade fish circling us. We swim back over the top deck and ascend up the mooring line for the surface interval.
After a cup of coffee and a chat about how amazing the dive was we were ready to go again. We kitted up and entered the water. Our group was second in and the instant we hit the water we could feel there had been a change. The current had picked up and was rushing from the bow to the stern. We pulled our way up a rope to the bow of the boat and began to pull ourselves down the mooring line and onto the wreck once more. As we descended I looked down to see the first group fining against the current. We where pulled horizontal on the rope as we continued down. We eventually made it down and began to swim, the original plan was to look at the exterior of the ship on this dive but it would not be possible. We swim into the hold once more, the water is calm inside and many of the smaller fish take refuge around the cars and cargo.
We find our selves in a one way traffic system for divers, every room and corner is filled with visiting humans all eager to look around the famous wreck. After battling through Trafalgar square we once again arrive at the bow, this time its different. When I emerge from the hatch I have to fin, full power, to catch hold of the hand rail. We stay for a while, the water rushing past us, it feels like the ship is powering along under the sea like a crazed ghost ship. Giant tuna and spade fish swim along side us. I look back to see masses of bubbles bellowing out of the old chimneys like smoke. Its instantly dragged into the distance by the current. We decide to leave, letting go of the rail we fly down the side of the wreck at an amazing rate. Just as we reach a train carriage that is on the top deck two of the Swedish divers I am with ask me to take a photo, I oblige and swim backwards. After getting the shot we once again are swept by the current to the rear mooring line, we ascend and get lunch, awesome.
Toby dives down to untie the mooring lines and we set off for home, but not without a final dive. After around two hours we reach shark reef. Unfortunately no sharks today but the strongest current I have ever felt, we are swept past a beautiful reef then our guide says we have to swim against the current. After making slow progress for a while, hoping from rock to rock, we give up. We let the current carry us, then a giant moray is spotted and a blue spotted ray. The current carries us round further and we deploy our DSMB (delayed surface marker buoy) for the boat to locate us. As I look down I see a very large pile of porcelain toilets and baths, a very strange site, obviously dumped or a lost cargo. We return to the boat and head for harbour. As the sun goes down we relax with a couple of beers, after being awake for nearly seventeen hours we head for home, and a well needed sleep.

Egyptians, the friendliest people on earth>>
So im officially a dive master!! Ive progressed through the course and completed the requirements, the journey so far, so good.
So today I guided a two family group, 8 people, on a snorkel trip to the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole is one of Dahab’s most famous sites, for infamous reasons, look it up on youtube and you will see what I mean. The blue hole is an awesome geological feature, a circular hole in the reef dropping some 100 meters deep. The reef and wildlife that call it home is diverse and plentiful, a great day out.
We arrive at the site after a jeep trip along many a gravel road. When you arrive at the blue hole you are presented with a good selection of restaurants to set up camp for the day. Having visited a number of times I was often directed to go to the Aqua Marina, run by two great Egyptians who are always at your service. After being shown to our seats a mixed juice arrives, free of charge, for myself because I am the guide. Now I know this is given to entice the customers to purchase the same, but you would not get a landlord in Stratford-On-Avon buying the guide a pint to entice his customers to buy lunch now would you?
We entered the water for our first snorkel trip, leaving our valuables in the good hands of the guys at the restaurant. We exit the water and are handed menus for lunch. The customers I had with me where well spoken and friendly English holiday makers. Keeping in mind that they are staying at Le Meridien, 5 star resort, and have booked their snorkel trip with the dive centre based in the resort, this is the first day they have ventured out of the resort and seen a camel!! Again keep in mind this is the best hotel in Dahab and the standards out weigh even the Hilton 5 star resort just down the road. Keeping all this in mind they turn to me and say “is it safe to eat here?” So I reply “I have had many a meal here and it has excelled every time…..and I’m a chef!!” All the meals arrive, again my meal is complimentary as I have delivered them custom. One of the girls had ordered a tuna pizza and it had not arrived. We begin to ask each other where the food is and sure enough the waiter arrives pizza in hand. He asks “You order pepperoni pizza?” Instantly the tone drops
“ No it was a tuna pizza!!”
“you sure? No perperoni pizza?” the waiter asks
“ No we specifically asked for tuna” the lady replies
“ Ah Ok, good cus this is tuna pizza” the waiter replies as he lays it on the table. A genuine laugh comes from all involved, with an air of surprise from the customers, almost as if they did not expect the waiter to have the capacity of humor. Everyone enjoyed their food and we head off for the second snorkel trip.
We exit the water, dry off then settle our bill and leave. The waiter gave me a complimentary bottle of water as I leave, saying goodbye to everyone by name.
I promise I will return with more customers.
The staff also help load and unload the trucks when we go there with divers, the level of service is amazing. My point is that would you get this in England? Who knows, I hope so, it just installs such trust in the community. My guests ask if there was any trouble with theft in any of the restaurants? I replied “ The waiters look after the belongings with up most care. If a restaurant gets a bad reputation here the level of service and hospitality in the other restaurants means the customers would just go else where and they would make no money. It’s in their best interest to offer the best service, and friendship possible”.

KOSHERY >>>
Matt, the peaceful protester, completed his Dive Master course yesterday. He completed all requirements and will be leaving for England on the 18th Oct.
Matt and I got on well, he’s a funny old chap, shame I couldn’t get him on the IDC but that’s his choice.
So usually when you complete your DM course the tradition is that you drink a beer through a snorkel, not matt. He doesn’t drink, or smoke for that matter. Matt decided to celebrate with Koshery all round. Koshery is the local Egytian dish, made up of pasta, rice, lentils and chickpeas all topped off with tomato sauce, beautiful.
So the past couple of days have been filled with fun dives. It’s a little different to guiding because you set your own path and get to explore a little more. If all goes to plan I’ll be completing my DM course over the next few days. On the 17th a large group (10 pac) will be arriving for their open water course. I will hopefully be fully qualified to assist on the course.
Ive been here for a month now and have learned a lot, but there is much more to come. I have met some great people and look forward to the challenges ahead. I sometimes think how much I miss certain elements of life at home, most of all my girl. We all have paths to create and follow and unfortunately its all part of the progression.
Ma ‘is salaama.

Hi all, im rubbish at updating this. Anyway, been here for three weeks now and im all settled in to the routine, Dahab has a nack of sucking you in and grabbing hold without a warning. Most people I spek to who came here for say six months, end up staying three to five years, somtimes more.
The studying is going well, I had exams on everything from dive equipment through to Physics and Physiology!!
Theres so much work involved in a day I hardly have time to breathe before my head hits the pillow. Working In diving is not as much a stressful job ut it is consuming. The logistics involved in aranging a days diving phenominal, For example:
An average day guiding a dive involves ariving at the dive centre around 8:15. Before the gusts arive you have to get an oxygen kit, first aid and a spares kit, all of which need to be signed out from the itinerary. Then you need to collect tanks, if your doing two dives in the day everyone needs two tanks, 12Ltr weighing around 50Kg each. Lets say theres three customers, one instructor and myself thats 10 tanks, plus one sare. All this plus a crate of equipment for each person needs to be loaded onto a truck. We leave at 9:00am when the customers arrive, we also need a permission slip to get us through the police check points.
The we get to dive, two dives with Lucnch in between, after this all equipment is hauld back on the truck and we arrive back at the centre. Th process is then reversed but all the kit mest also be washed.
Then log books are filled and we discuss the day and the fish we see. Custmer service is key, we have to keep the customer happy and willing to return for more the folowing days. When the custmer leaves its time for a beer, then off home to study for exams...then slleeeep!!!
Awake the next morning to repeat the process....
Average day, somtimes different if we are running a course, so dont go thinking its all sunshine and cocktails, fair enough its better than the regular 9-5, but its still work its just outdoors in 30 degree heat with alot of swimming around looking at fish thrown in for good measure.

Long road to Dahab>>.
So I arrived in Dahab two days ago, Its possibly the most relaxing place I have ever been. I have my own flat with a bedroom and a bathroom!! I also have about three million pages of studying to do to become a fully trained diving instructor.
I have spent the last two days diving some of the famous sites around Dahab, now its time to study. I have my first exam in the morning and am very nervous,
more detailed update to come....

Egypt Begins>>>>
So here we go, landed at 8:30 local time in Sharm El Sheik yesterday evening. Confronted by taxi drivers I hopped in and got scammed, standard. Anyway it was 32 degrees C at 12 midnight last night, its mid day now and its 36 degrees, Im in the process of acclimatising.
All good, off to Dahab tomorrow where I will be living out the rest of my ten months, Diving every day. Its a little too hot at the moment but it will be all good when i finally get under water, first days blog signing out.
P.S. love you Rach, missing you more than you know.

Shopping
Cant believe I spent £70 on toothpaste shampoo and sun cream yesterday. but it does have to last a year so its not too bad.
I also had a broken laptop, and with only two weeks to go my main form of communication was looking to be out the window. BUT, a new hard drive arrived from the states yesterday and is currently installing as I speak, the main advantage of this is that I get to take my entire music collection with me which means I can upload films, with a decent sound track.
News: 38 degrees C in Cairo today.

What a weekend>>>
Reading festival 2008 was amazing....i think, the pictures tell the story (FaceBook).
Anyway only two and a half weeks to go to Egypt, scary..i'm nervous, scared, excited, happy, sad and impatient.
Its a funny old world/ life, i've never really had the chance feel so connected with someone that I really never want it to end, i've never connected with someone so well. Then it all comes true and I have to leave. I don't ever want it to end, but Egypt is a big part of who I am and it needs to be done. I only hope she feels the same and when we meet again she will still feel the same.
After working seven days a week for the last couple of months its party time, starting with reading festival, closley followed by a break to the Cornish coast. I've just purchased tickets to go see the king blues at KOKO's London, awesome. Closely followed with a leaving party , TC live at SMACK , 10 months in Egypt, 2 months in New Zealand ( Reunited with friends ) then Vancouver on the way home, simple really.

Powerboat 2 and beyond >>
Well, completed the powerboat course, enjoyed it that much that I was offered a job as a steward on the lake where I did the course!!
Im going to continue on the powerboat journey and possibly become an instructor, the more water based employment the better.
Have started collecting things togehter for Egypt, i.e sun cream t-shirts etc. I have also had a few other things to do, Had my medical the othere day and it turns out I am healthy and above average!! i'll drink to that, I have also treated myself to a pair of Wiley XL-L sunglasses, amazing, should keep the sand and sun out the eyes in Egypt.
All is on schedule just gotta keep working away and pack then its all go>>
Ps. Anyone who wants to come visit let me know as I should be able to get discount at the maridien hotel dahab.
P.P.s I'm pretty dam happy right now, kind of like sitting on top of the world>>

Update
Well maybe we didn't win at paint ball but it was a great day, word to the medley for sorting it. Bobby B went for his try dive and seemed to be a natural fish, you never know he might even get me as his instructor for his open water course.
Took the boat up to Hill Morton yesterday, and will return with it sometime next week.
Egypt creeps closer by the day, am I ready to leave? not just yet, Summer is really grabbing hold of me here, its all good but if I don't do it now I never will.
Giving blood next week, doing my bit. Then the Power Boat course will be taking up my days off, cant wait to get behind the wheel of some heavy weight speed boats, Bring it>>

June flys by
Les mis, what a great show, and a great day out in London town. Found a Fopp thats still a Fopp!! expensive!!
Its all work work work at the moment, the small intervals of time off spent looking for other work and spending too much cash!! :stimulus: friday was awsome!! first one ive been to for a while and well worth it, top night. I awoke the next morning, on martins sofa, to remember its the peace festival, the initial shock was followed by a day of drinking cider and listening to irish music! then off to coventry to see TNA wrestling (wicked), which involved more drink, then back to downtown L.I. for more drink, fun and frolics.
so paint ball this week, barley mow your going down!! might even get to go diving some time in the near future, bring it

Blow torch the candle>
Wow I feel awake!! for the first time in about seven days I not only went to bed early but had a lay in aswell!!
Custard Factory Sunday Night>>
Great night, Roni Size represents LIVE!! unbelievable, really did install my confidence back in live electronics combined with the best double bass and drums ever, Mc Dynamite.
I'm having a bit of a love affair with dub step at the moment and oh....my....god!! Scratch perverts fulfilled that love on Sunday, Ive never heard such a good mix of Dub step, hip-hop and the rest, amazing!!
Quite worried at the fact I drank nearly a full bottle of JD and felt vaguely normal....and remembered the night?
Next on the cards is a fishing trip to Oxford, should be good, bit of time to relax a little....with a beer!!
Then off to les Mis in London, followed by a little :stimulus: after that.
Then down to the serious training, dive medicals, powerboat license, Visa, blah blah blah!!
The candle is re-molded, lets blaze>>

Great Dive>>
Went for a dive yesterday, what a great day. Met a guy called Toby who was diving on twin 7 ltr tanks.
We headed down to the hydro box at around 33m which ive been wanting to do again for a long time.
Dive two we headed down to 33m to a secret gnome garden, strange bunch these divers. Headed back up to the 22m shelf and had a look round the Wessex helicopter then over to the Sterngarth, a 33ft tug at 22m depth.
The third dive we went to the west end of the lake to find the Cessna airplane, then over to the sunken boat and back along the wall to exit the water. I have never dived this area of Stoney Cove and this made my day, great days diving.

What A Week>
Bangface, wow what a weekend, so much fun it has to be done again next year.
The longitchington beer festival was an amazing success and will be no doubt repeated next year over the may bank holiday weekend.
To finish all off Detonate indoor festival in Nottingham, what a great night. I highly recommend it to anyone. It is the first I went to but it will not be the last, loads of pics up my facebook.
All eyes on Egypt now, I'm off to do my RYA powerboat 2 license in about a month, This will then allow me drive the dive boats anywhere in the world. Next step will be to get my dive medical, allowing me to teach across Europe. After that all I have to do is save enough money to pay for the Egypt trip and I'm away.

Watching The World
Well, today I went to Leamington to purchase some new chef whites and go to lunch with the parents.
After purchasing my chef whites I had to wait in a Hoover shop while my mother got some filter thingys... anyway, I stood in the shop staring out at an amazing looking Austin Martin DB9 across the street, it was amazing to see how many people stopped to look at this status symbol paying no attention to any other cars on the street, one woman even stopped walking a did a full circuit of the car. A few moments later a couple of teenagers, clearly from a wealthy background, came out from the shop that the car was parked outside. They did not bat an eyelid at the DB9, so was it because they are used to seeing these types of car just parked outside? or did they just have no interest such a thing, too busy going about their day to bother?
Hads a new business idea today...watch this space!!!
